It is arguable that the 1920s produced some of the best designed Rolls-Royce automobiles, both mechanically and ascetically. However as these cars aged, certain body styles aged better than others. For the less desirable, owners had the solution to keeping their Rolls looking up with the times. Many owners replaced them with other bodies, and in some cases with elegant more modern bodies by offered by several London dealers. This automobile, GEN 70 received the tasteful 3 Position Drophead Coupe, the most prestigious offering by the Southern Motor Company. GEN 70 was originally ordered as a Sedanca with coachwork by Thrupp and Maberly Limited, this automobile was sold April 23rd, 1929 to Col. John Kennedy of 5 Radnor Place through The Car Market Limited. GEN70s build sheets note that Rolls-Royce was to change the black backed headlamps distinct to the Twenty h.p., for larger more attractive headlamps like the Lucas P100s that it wears today. The early photograph of the car with original bodywork does show the black backed 20 h.p. head lamps. GEN 70 retained its original coachwork until October 27, 1937 when The Southern Motor Co. was commissioned to have the more attractive 3 Position Drophead Coupe body built, and fitted onto its chassis. This body style happened to be the most prestigious of Southerns offerings, and is documented in the build sheets. GEN 70 remained in England through several ownership changes, until it was purchased by Jean C. Chouinard in June of 1968. Mr. Chouinard then shipped his Rolls-Royce to the U.S., where it resided in Louisiana through the early 1970. Upon his death, his son moved GEN 70 to Massachusetts where it stayed until 1971, when it was purchased by its current owner through a sealed bid process against another well known Rolls-Royce collector. With its current owner of 44 years, the car underwent a cosmetic restoration: paint, upholstery and a new top approximately 10 years ago by a well known firm in a very tasteful color combination. Driven very little since, it has been properly stored on the property of its long term caretaker, and never participated in a Concours d Elegance, making it an excellent candidate to show. Recently re-commissioned and serviced, this automobile runs strong and drives, as it should. Included in the sale are the original build sheets from Rolls-Royce and documentation from The Southern Motor Company noting the body swap. We also have a photograph of GEN 70 with its original Thrupp and Maberly coachwork and two photographs of GEN 70 with its Southern Motor Co. coachwork (exact date unknown). Also included is itandrsquo;s Registration book documenting ownership changes from 1947 through the current ownerandrsquo;s purchase in 1970, as well as various documentation from the previous owner including: British Military Registration and title as well as itandrsquo;s Louisiana title and registration and numerous other documents. World wide shipping can be arragned by request. Price Reduced.
