Packard was the leading luxury marque at the start of the Classic era. It was one of the oldest car companies in America, dating back to the first Packard rolling out of the factory in 1899. The company had begun life as the Ohio Automobile Company based on Warren, Ohio. It became the Packard Motor Car Company in 1902 and moved to Detroit, the heart of the burgeoning auto industry, in 1903.
As an exclusive producer of expensive, luxury cars, Packard was struggling through the Great Depression. In an effort to expand production volume in 1935, the company introduced a new line of mid-price cars called the One Twenty. Priced at around $1,000, the car drove Packard to eight place in U.S. sales by 1938. The car was very well built and featured Packards first application of independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes, and it carried the prestige of the Packard name. In 1937, Packard added a six-cylinder engine that by 1939 displaced 245 CID and produced around 100horsepower and rode on a 110 inch wheelbase chassis called the 110.
This is a PreWar 1939 Packard 1700 Series Touring Sedanthat is essentially in very goodoverall condition, the paint shines nicely, the interior is decent but could use a minor renovation, the engine purrs, it shifts smoothly as if it had just been broken in, the brakes grab nicely, she is ready to win at the shows right now. This Packard has the signature Suicide Gangster Style Doors that we all really love and simply does not disappoint. The body is in great shape, the interior is nice, she runs and drives nicely. Take it to a show and win right now.
Keep it original, we hope you do this, as this car is a survivor owned by one individual for 40+ years, lovingly taken care of, never driven in inclement weather, and always stored inside. There is essentially no rust on this car and it is as original in 1939.
The mechanicals of this car are very good to excellent and we believe that all she has is the original 60,999 miles and that this car has truly lived a pampered life. Dont forget, this car is 74 years old and still runs and drives, you can t fake or duplicate the way this car feels when you drive it. it has the original flat 6, 245 Cubic Inch making 245 horsepower (incredible for that era), and is a matching numbers car. All of the major systems work well, it starts right up, idles nicely, the transmission shifts nicely, and you are off to the car show.
The interior is in good condition, but could use a renovation. It is certainly driveable as it is now, but one can easily see how an upgrade would increase the cars overall value. A recovering of the seats and a replacement of the headliner would be an improvement we would be happy to assist the new owner to complete. All of the glass is great, including the fold outback windows for the gentleman or lady to allow cigarette smoke out as not to bother the other passengers. Overall the interior feels good and you cant help but smile a big grin driving her to get a gallon of milk!
The body is also in excellent condition, even though it is 74 years old. No rot, no rust, no repairs, just all original, and as original. Again, clearly maintained correctly and preserved lovingly.
Overall the paint shines nicely, though it is not perfect, and you will win at shows now. She does have some minor nits and nats that come with time, this is not freshly painted. Overall this car runs nice, drives nice, has a fantastic interior, and has a body in excellent condition. It is ready to cruise to the beach, car shows, ice cream, or wherever.
