ENGINE A No compression test was performed. Engine block number is XPAG/TD/8444. This engine is the correct style of one that came with the car, but not the matching number engine for the car. That would be XPAG/4471. The engine installed is an early TD engine, upgraded with the later style oil pump. The engine has been bored, and sleeved, to 1500cc specifications. The cylinder head casting number of 168422, which is correct for a late MG TD or TF, TF 1500. It has larger valves than the stock head would. It is a long reach head, requiring the 3/4 reach spark plugs. Engine has the 6 quart oil pan installed. NGK BP6ES plugs are recommended. Camshaft installed is a 0.012 clearance camshaft, for valve setting. Has the original MG TC stamped steel valve cover. The chain is missing for the oil filler cap. Lower breather tube clamp is missing.EXHAUST AA No problems found. Looks like a mild steel exhaust system has been installed. Mostly original. Larger rear exhaust pipe than original pee shooter exhaust pipe. Rear pipe section painted black. FUEL SYSTEM B Car has a single, late style, S.U. Fuel pump, mounted on the firewall. In addition, a secondary fuel pump is mounted at the rear axle. It is operated by a switch under the dash. Carburetors are 1 1/2 S.U. HS4. The size is correct for this engine size. H2 type S.U. carbs can be easily sourced, but might change operation. Original aluminum air cleaner manifold and oil bath air cleaner are not installed, nor are they present. Stellings and Hellings pancake air cleaners are installed on the car. IGNITION EQUIPMENT C Car presently has a Pertronix electronic ignition. Distributor rotation is counterclockwise. Firing order is 1-3-4-2. Distributor is a later style Lucas distributor, with a vacuum advance, and a micrometer adjuster built in on the advance unit. No micrometer adjuster bracket and clamp are found on this engine (would be standard equipment for MG TB and TC). COOLING SYSTEM D All water hoses looked to be in very good condition. No water leaks were found. Checked coolant, and was rust free. Radiator core is a 3 pass core, correct style. Fan is the original metal fans for the TC-TD-TF. A 7 Blade plastic fan, used on MGB, can be installed. Greatly improves air flow at low speed. A quick-release, racing style radiator cap, is installed. Note: Needs to be turned, to open bonnet (hood). FLYWHEEL AND CLUTCH E Tested OK. Car was originally equipped with a chain operated clutch. Still operates this way. GEARBOX F Tested OK. Original MOWOG 4 speed transmission. Could have an 8 clutch installed; which would be correct for a 1500cc model. Correct size for TC was a 7 1/4 clutch. Could have a Sunbeam Alpine 7 1/2 installed as well. Operation is fine. PROPELLER SHAFT G Original drive shaft for MG TC installed. No problems seen. REAR AXLE H Rear end ratio for the MG TC was 5.125:1. Optional gearing was 4.875:1, which can be sourced and installed. Also, a 3.9:1 pumpkin from a Morris Minor, can be sourced, and installed. Do not know what gear ratio car is currently running. If stock, at 4,000 rpm, vehicle will be traveling at 62 mph. REAR ROAD SPRINGS I No problems found. STEERING GEAR J The steering gearbox appeared to be OK. Use 600W gear oil in the steering box. The Bishops Cam Steering box has been replaced, with either the Datsun box, or the Volkswagen box. Steering wheel is an aftermarket stock Brooklands steering wheel. FRONT SUSPENSION K Front rubber spring bushings have been replaced, with either urethane, or rubber bushings. HYDRAULIC DAMPERS L Performed a bounce test on the car. All shocks found to be in working order, and dampened oscillation very quickly. Girling/Luvax hydraulic dampers were installed all around. BRAKING SYSTEM M Brake system requires use of either Castrol
