andrsquo;49 Ford Thunder Road Rum Runner

Take a close look at this frame off, nut and bolt build. The pictures, video and story are interesting to say the least.

I am helping a friend sell this flawless Ford Coupe. Just as a matter of reference, I have been judging cars at all types of show levels for over 25 years and have extensive experience in restoration of many marques. I am extremely picky and probably grade more on the lower side when evaluating vehicles. I would consider a 10 on my scale to be a Concour Quality vehicle, just so you have a reference. This example is collector quality and is a solid #1 Survivor Condition vehicle from my perspective. My friend is probably one of the most gifted car builders I have known. Period. To say he is A/R is an understatement.

Project Shoebox:

When Ike and Jason of Sandamp;S Enterprises of San Clemente decided they wanted to built themselves a hotrod they had a very narrow idea. This shoebox project would require just the right body style. The andrsquo;49 club or business coupe with its short roofline and clean, simple front grill was Ikeandrsquo;s favorite. A andrsquo;50 of the same style was his second choice. The main thing was, it had to be a short top coupe. The deluxe coupe (long top), just does not fit the car. According to Ike It just looks like a andlsquo;bad hatandrsquo;. I had looked for an original car for awhile but most of what I found were, what I call long tops and the short tops had been snatched up and hot rodded. After looking for quite awhile and was about to throw in the towel on the project, he found a bone stock andrsquo;49 club coupe in a Kansas bone yard, and from the photos on the Internet, the patina looked very doable. The proprietor of the yard thought he was crazy when he asked him to try and not scratch it. After its arrival Ike and his son Jason made some plans for the build.

Planning the Project

The idea of his build was a total nut and bolt build of a dry lakes style car that would be true to the early 50andrsquo;s hot rodders. The rule would be: Anything that would be visible on the car would have to be of the time period, right down to the cloth covered wire and correct terminals. The only exception would be the much improved internal engine parts and the 5 speed overdrive transmission and clutch. So, if it wasnandrsquo;t available for sale over the counter it would have to be fabricated. For instance, the blower could
