One of the most elegant designs to come out of Browns Lane, the ancestral home of Jaguar, the XK 140 was launched in the Autumn of 1954. Following then Jaguar tradition, just as its predecessor, the superlative XK120, was named for its ability to (comfortably) exceed 120 miles per hour (a feat first recorded on the Jabbeke Highway in Belgium), so too, the 140 derived its name having reached over 141 mph on the same stretch of road. In addition to more speed it also answered a loud call for greater cabin space than the slightly diminutive 120, to accommodate taller drivers. This was achieved by moving the bulkhead forward 3 inches and lengthening the doors andamp; cockpit. The accompanying slight increase in weight was easily offset by increases in power and braking ability. Additionally, rack andamp; pinion steering and telescopic shock absorbers improved the already superb handling. With only 1,959 examples built, the fixed head coupe had the lowest production run of all the left hand drive XK140s, yet they are the most practical and best looking of all the three models. The most desirable option available on any of the range was the Special Equipment (SE) or, as it was known in the U.S., the Modified Competion (MC) package. In its ultimate iteration, this included the C-Type cylinder head, derived from the Le Mans winning C-Type Jaguars, dual exhausts and fog lamps. This particular example is a fully restored, multiple concours winning, matching numbers SE. The Carmen Red paint is flawless and the tan leather and burr walnut dashboard pristine, still every bit the show winner. Mechanically, in addition to its rebuilt engine, it benefits from upgraded brakes (front and rear discs from the subsequent XK150) and a five-speed gearbox (a significant improvement in shifting performance and ratio range over the original stock Moss transmission). Consequently, it drives superbly, making it perfectly suited for vintage rallying or fabulous, classic road trips! Show it, drive it, enjoy it, you cant go wrong! |
