| Details: | During 1959 and 1960, the Big Three automakers planned to introduce their own compact cars. Most of these designs were scaled-down versions of the conventional American car, using four- or six-cylinder engines instead of V8s, and with bodies about 20% smaller than their standard cars. An exception to this strategy was the Chevrolet Corvair. It was powered by an air-cooled horizontal six-cylinder engine made almost entirely out of aluminum. The engine was mounted in the rear of the car, driving the rear wheels through a compact transaxle. Suspension was independent at all four wheels. There was no conventional frame, it was the first Unibody built by Fisher Body. The tires were an entirely new wide low-profile design. As the only American-designed, mass-produced passenger car to use a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, For Chevrolet to usher in such innovations in an American car was a brave move. The vehicles main competition was the VW Bug and the Porsche 911. It was originally built to compete with the Bug, but with the flat-six engine, it was more in the Porsche 911 league. The new for 1964 larger 2.7L air-cooled, aluminum flat sixes were versatile engines that produced 110 horsepower paired to a 4 Speed Manual Transmission. The Monza convertible option was the sportiest of all the four original Corvair models. In 1964 it carried a $2,492 factory price, with their improved rear suspensions, offered engaging driving dynamics. The improved handling made Corvairs fun cars in the corners.
