If you desire a full-size Mopar convertible from the mid- to late-1960s, the Dodge Polara was the only big droptop available in the US between 1965 and 1970. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to offer this 1966 Dodge Polara 500 Convertible.

Built at the Jefferson Avenue Chrysler Plant in Detroit, Michigan on August 8, 1965, this particular Polara was just the 67th example built that year, according to the VIN.

Outside, itandrsquo;s dressed in white and the paint is in fine shape, due to a previous restoration, but there may be a few blemishes visible at close range. The carandrsquo;s glass panels are in good condition, as are the vehicleandrsquo;s lights, which are complete and intact. The matching power vinyl top is brand new and fits like factory new. The car rolls on Dayton Thoroughbred whitewall tires, 215/75R14, with factory spinner wheel covers; the tires and wheels are in good condition. The body panels are straight and the bumpers are in good form. The engine bay is tidy and the battery looks new.

In that bay is a 383 CID V-8 engine (G code) with a four-barrel carburetor and is linked to a Torqueflite three-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the white interior shows very well. The seats are in great shape, the contrasting black carpet with matching dashboard are in fine form, as is the three-spoke steering wheel with its trim ring to sound the horn. The white door panels, the gearshift lever and mirrors are all in similar, overall good condition. Finishing the interior is the factory AM radio. Driver assist features include power steering and power brakes.

TheDodge Polarawas an automobile introduced in the United States for the 1960model yearasDodgeandrsquo;s top-of-the-linefull-size car; after the introduction of theDodge Custom 880in 1962, the Polara nameplate designated a step below the full-sized, best trimmed Dodge model; the Polara that year had been downsized to what was in effect intermediate, or mid-size status. In its various forms, the Polara name was used by Dodge until 1973, when its position in Dodgeandrsquo;s line-up was replaced by theDodge Monaco. The name Polara is a reference to the Polarisstar, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding theSpace Raceduring the early 1960s.

For 1965, Chrysler moved the Polara back to aChrysler C full-size platformthat was shared with Chrysler and Plymouth models. Once again offered in a full range of bodies (sedans, hardtops, station wagons, etc.), the Polara, in effect, replaced the 880 and remained a step below the Custom 880, and the newMonacohardtop coupe was now Dodgeandrsquo;s top model. The previous mid-sized Dodges that were sold under the names Polara 500, Polara, 440, and 330 continued in production under the name Dodge Coronet, their wheelbase shrinking to 117 inches.

In the 1966 model year, the Monaco would replace the Custom 880 as the mid-level model while a new Monaco 500 would replace the previous 1965 Monaco.One constant of the 1965 to 1968 models was taut, square-edged styling, which wasupdated each year.
