Built for only one year, and about 1,000 units, the Baja SE was a special edition Super Beetle made to commerate Volkswagens success in the Baja offroad races from 1967-1971. Built to full specification; these Super Beetles came equipped standard with Marathonblau-metallic/Marathon Blue Metallic paintwork (paint code L96M), Baja wheels (Lemmerz made) with hexagonal VW aluminium hub covers, taper tip tail pipes, black vinyl high-back bucket seats, two-speed fan powered ventilation, rear window defogger, day/night rear view mirror, glove compartment lock, and vanity mirror. The dealer could also install several optional parts including: bumper overriders, Baja side stripes, Baja Bug logo on engine cover, plaque on glove box lid and optional Bosch halogen driving lamps. Fewer than 100 of these cars are currently believed to be driving the roads of the US. This Super Beetle is equipped with the following: -1600cc dual port AE code engine fed by a single Solex 34 PICT 3 carburetor, putting out about a mind blowing 50hp. Can you handle that much power?! -4 speed manual transmission. -All of the above listed model standard features, and the dealer optional bumper over-riders. This particular Super Beetle was purchased by one of my friends in June of 2012 from a gentleman in Candor, NY who needed to sell it to repair his house after the terrible floods that affected that area in September 2011. It was apparent from talking to this gentleman that he cared for the car very much and did not want to let it go and that it was always garaged. At the time neither she nor I was aware of just how special this model was, thinking it was just a nice looking classic Beetle. She kept the car for the next 4 years and garaged it always, never letting it see snow, much less salt. I purchased the car from her this April when she wanted to get something more modern. Over the next month or so I fixed the few little problems the engine was having, mainly it just needed a full tune up and a waxing. Which entailed the following: -Replaced the spark plugs and wires. -Replaced the distributor cap and rotor, points looked fine. -Changed the oil in the air filter (SAE30 conventional). -Changed the engine oil (20w50 conventional) and replaced the screen filter. -Adjusted the valves. -Replaced the plastic fuel filter (which is occasionally known to fail and cause a fire) with a metal unit. -Tuned the carburetor. -Replaced the generator brushes. -Replaced the air hoses. -Replaced the shiftier boot. The driving experience in the car is best summed up with one word; fun. I cant explain it, the car isnt fast by any stretch, it doesnt handle particularly well (granted for the suspension design it isnt bad at all), it doesnt stop all that well either with the manual drum brakes, and the seats are not supportive for enthusiastic driving. Yet something about it; its character is just infectious. The 4 speed stick makes a wonderfully mechanical quiet click when it shifts in and out of gears, assuring you that the gear is selected. I dont even miss having an FM radio, let alone a tape deck or CD player. Honestly, if it wasnt a special edition, I would probably keep it and restore it. Did I mention working on it is a piece of cake? The good: - Less than 71,000 miles on the clock. -The car presents fantastically for a nearly 45 year old vehicle. I recently has it up to the Ithaca Euro Meet and the response was enormous. Every where I go people comment and complement the car. -The engine runs perfectly; idles consistently and doesnt hunt. The pickup is good, keeping in mind the engine size. -The clutch engages and disengages smoothly and has plenty of feedback. -Transmission shifts flawlessly, I have never heard it grind a single gear. -The interior is exceptionally clean with only a small hole in the |
