There are cars that are made to be the perfect street racer from new. During the gas crunch of the early 70s andamp; the cut back in anything cool, a few companies were just winding up something special for their futures. Somehow BMW got their design of the new 1970 2800 CS so right that it was clear that BMW was going to go racing with the best of what Europe had to offer. To compete in 1971, the racing homologation rules stated that one must make 1000 cars for street use for privateers to buy, right out of a new car showroom. This model, now the 3.0CS, was ready to compete against Fords Capri andamp; the mighty Porsche 911 to name a few. The earliest Lightweight 3.0CSLs were carbd, known as the Ultra Lightweight. By late 1972, this 2nd series of the 3.0CSL Lightweight went to using a more modern fuel injection system. Hence, the 3.0CSi was born for the streets of Europe. From this platform, BMW made 1265 cars in total. This fine Series 2 example, # 2275345, was 1 of only 429 produced. On September 25th, 1983, Tommy Valanni andamp; Charlie Re traveled to Savona Italy to purchase a 3.0CS andamp; this 3.0CSL. They went to Auto Elite andamp; bought the 2 cars (see the 8th photo while picking it up from Savona, Italy). Charlie paid $3000. for his CS andamp; Tommy paid a whopping $6000. for his CSL, then having clocked only 25K km from new. A few years in, Tommy sold the CSL to none other than his travel partner, Charlie. Charlie enjoyed it for a few more years until sold to his friend, Joe Ryba. It is in 100% original condition except for its beautiful Fjord Blue paintwork, which was redone in 1997 by its 5th andamp; last long term caretaker, who owned a BMW Store called Stevens Creek BMW in California. One would think the paint is all original as its aged perfectly andamp; has the perfect patina. It has the street package option consisting of steel doors (as opposed to alloy doors) andamp; full glass (as opposed to Plexi back andamp; rear side glass), she was never raced andamp; kept in a climate controlled garage since new. Its Black interior is all original including its Scheel Racing Buckets. The Nardi Wood steering andamp; shift knob have been added for that personal, yet classic look. It rides on a set of 16 Alpina Wheels, but we have its original 14 x 7 wheels mounted to s set of XWX tires. She has only 40,000 KM (25K miles) andamp; was delivered new to Auto Elite BMW-Ferrari-Mercedes in Savona, Italy. We acquired this outrageous original CSL in 2011 andamp; have cherished it every day since. It was a dream to have a good one...it may just be the best all original 73 CSL on the planet. In fact she won the prestiges Amelia Award at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours delegance hands down with Brian Redman andamp; Sam Posey judging it. I will defend that statement all the way LOL ! Expensive yes...irreplaceable yes. We invite you to come andamp; inspect this rare mating in person. Please call us to discuss this CSL personally if you are serious. Otherwise please wait for one this good which may never happen again. |
