Details: The Lotus Europa is a two door mid-engined GT coupe built by Lotus Cars from 1966 to 1975. The original Europa used Lotus founder Colin Chapmans minimalist steel backbone chassis that was first used in the Lotus Elan, while also relying on its fibreglass moulded body for structural strength. The Europa was based on a design sketch by Ron Hickman to compete for Henry Ford IIs contract to build a Le Mans race car in the early 1960s. The Europa was designed and built to be an embodiment of Chapmans oft-stated philosophy of automotive design: Simplify, then add lightness. The four-wheel independent suspension was typical of Chapmans thinking. The rear suspension was a modified Chapman strut, as used for Chapmans earlier Formula racing car designs.

This particular example is a unrestored original 2 owner. The car has been well maintained and has had the very desirable Bean water pump conversion. In addition, all suspension has been rebushed with the teflon type, recent brake service, and clutch replacement. While the body carries the patina of 40+ years it still presents nicely as a survivor. The engine is the Ford 1600cc twin cam with big valve head and dual Stomberg carbs. It also has the optional 5 speed trans. The drivability is superb, tight, and responsive. Lotus cars still hold a place in modern production and racing provenance. The vintage Lotus models are appreciating smartly as their styling and drivability are hard to ignore.
