| Details: | With the 1973 model year came lots of bad news in emissions regulation, safety standards and gas prices, but to true the Pontiac aficionado these problems were all over-shadowed by a single tidbit of good news from PMD 1973 was the year of the Super Duty.The 455SD was, arguably, the greatest Pontiac engine ever bolted together. The block has reinforced main bearing webs and 4-bolt mains. It used strong forged steel connecting rods that were held onto the heavy-duty nodular iron crank by 716-inch bolts. Pistons were TRW forged pieces, and the oiling system used a 80-lb. Spring in the high-volume pump, screw-in oil plugs in the block and had a provision for a dry-sump pump. The distributors oil pump drive gear was oversized as well. |
