There are few cars more memorable or revered from the 1960s-70s than the BMW 2002 and 2002tii. Style, performance and durability were what made BMW The Ultimate Driving Machine. It set the pace for the modern 3-series and along the way earned cult-like status among enthusiasts as well as practical-mided motorists for a roomy trunk, seating for four and a reliable overhead cam four cylinder powerplant. By 1974-5, BMW of North America had a big job to do if they were to continue selling cars here in the USA - meet tough NHTSA standards for crashworthiness and emissions. As a relatively small manufacturer, BMW met those challenges, but not without raising the ride height and adding huge,-- energy-absorbing bumpers to their entire line of automobiles sent to North America. Performance suffered as well, BUT NOT FOR THE tii models. But none of these mandated regulations kept BMW from selling every last one. This 1974 BMW 2002tii, is the last year of the tii. This is the History of Mel and Kates 1974 BMW 2002tii; Mel and Kate bought this tii, back in circa 1988, from their personal, and retired Physician, in Pueblo, Colorado, who purchased this tii, new. Upon retirement, the Physician was leaving the immediate area, and decided to sell his tii, and the approximate mileage at the time, was about 75k miles. (now at 94k, with a working odometer) Mel and Kate had always admired this tii, and expressed interest in buying it, should it ever come up for sale. In around 1989, Mel and Kate had become new owners of this original and unmolested tii, as they did purchase it from the Physician, that eventually moved. In the ensuing years, an upcoming special Personal Anniversary was on Mel and Kates horizon, and Mel told Kate he would re-furbish the tii, for her. After deliberation, Kates favorite color and jewelry was JADE, (so for this special occasion, this tii is now painted in Jadegrun, which is a shade off, from this tiis original code, Amazonasgrun), her favorite fabric was Wool, along with the unique HERRINGBONE pattern. So it was then settled. Mel agreed to Kates passionate requests, for 2 subtle changes, -and the car went to the BMW tech, to perform a stock engine rebuild, and then the paint and interior were next to be done. Not long after the rebuild, and other subtle changes, tragedy played Mels final card. By early 1996, Mel fell sick to a Terminal illness. At this point, they had owned and driven the tii, for about 25k miles. At this point the tii, was retired into long term storage, till Mel, hopefully regained his health. Sadly, this was not in the future, for Mel, - very unfortunate, for Kate, and the kids. The tii, was in long term storage until 2011, where a close friend of Kate and Mel, found a good home in California, for Grace- to be re-commissioned into the Vintage Car World, so now officially, Grace, is now out of storage, and roadworthy again, where the tii should be, .. on the long winding roads, as The Ultimate Driving Machine. The tii, now a stunning Jade-Grun, has been gone through and sorted out, as now it is completely road-worthy, showing 94k miles and slowly increasing as it now gets out on the weekends.Grace looks amazing for her age.
That is the Mel and Kate story. This well kept example, of a 1974 2002 tii, in Jade-Grun (Emerald Green) over Saddle Tan on Wool Herringbone is now recommissioned from long-term storage, and now road-worthy. The tii was last registered in Colorado, but now resides in a Showroom, in the San Francisco Bay area, with a Clean Title available, and no back fees due. The mileage is stated to be original miles as per the 2nd owners, Mel and Kate, who bought it from the now retired Physician.
No structural rust, very clean, accident free body, has its original tii NOSE PANEL intact. Typical problem areas for rust, the spare tire well, front apron and R/R quarter (near the fuel filler cap) are clean and original. The
