FERRARI DINO 308GT4 $74,995.00 The example we have here is a lovely unmolested California car, sold new by Ferrari of Los Gatos on June 17th, 1976 to a Mr. Paul Cooper in San Francisco. This not a restored car and itandrsquo;s sure not one of the many beaters out there on the market, this is just a nice honest example in lovely condition. Records we have indicate this owner moved to Los Angeles and retained possession of the car for the next 40 years roughly before relinquishing it. We have many service records along with ownerandrsquo;s books. The indicated mileage today is only 48,013. At 47,908 the car had a $3,500.00 service after a 20% discount that included timing belts, service work and water pump. In 1973 at the Paris auto show Ferrari unveiled the first production Ferrari with a mid-engine V8. This engine layout would be the backbone of Ferrari for many years to follow. Another big change was the switch to Bertone as the designer rather than the across town Pinninfarina design house that had worked for Ferrari for decades. Mounted transversely, the engine is a 3 litre, (2,927cc) 4-cam, 90 degree V-8 with 4 Weber Carburetors mated to a 5-speed gear box. In US form this engine was rated at 240 horsepower. In May 1976 the Dino name on the car was officially replaced with the Ferrari Prancing Horse logo on the hood, steering wheel, road wheels and trunk lid. On July 1, 1975 a factory update had been sent to Ferrari Dealers in-order to make revisions to the badging, mostly implemented at the dealer level. Like most early cars this one has been updated with the logos whilst retaining the Dino 308GT4 on the trunk. The significance of the Dino name is often lost on people but it was in honor of Enzo Ferraris son who died in 1956, and his name was used to honor his memory. Production was very limited, and by todayandrsquo;s standards incredibly low. From 1973 to 1980 only 2,826 examples were produced. In the US they were available at the end of 1974 as a 1975 model year. The first series cars were non catalyst cars and the lightest of any year. 1976 and 1977 saw the second series cars. These had a few minor cosmetic changes but came with a catalytic converter and still 240 horsepower but weighed in heavier. The final version was built until 1980 with horsepower dropping to 205. The chassis was 115.2 inches in length, allowing a second row of seats and a trunk. A side effect of the longer wheelbase was terrific handling and arguably better than the GTB/GTS versions that followed. Finished in Argento Auteil Metallizzato (Bright Silver) with Red Leather interior. We only just got the car in. More photos will be posted later. |
