Regular viewers know that we love the R107 Mercedes-Benz SLs. Durableand#44; fun to driveand#44; stylishand#44; and shockingly affordableand#44; theyre the embodiment of everything we love about cars. This 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SLand#44; for exampleand#44; wears bright red paintand#44; is loaded with optionsand#44; has a top that goes down (of course)and#44; and has a sticker price less than a beat-up used Honda. Yeahand#44; pretty hard to do better than this on a budget. We wont tell anyone how affordable this car isand#44; so when you pull into your drivewayand#44; your neighbors will think you won the lottery. Somehowand#44; this car is frozen in our collective psyche as the ultimate example of statusand#44; luxuryand#44; and powerand#44; and just showing up in one means you get A-list treatment. Its even better in bright redand#44; which is about as high-visibility as you can get. Its probably original paintand#44; which speaks highly of the Mercedes-Benz effortsand#44; but it is now 40 years old so its showing some age. As alwaysand#44; build quality was exemplary and these cars just dont seem to wear out and they tend to lead good lives with people who care for themand#44; and thats clearly been the case here. It doesnt look like it has ever spent a winter in the snow and despite being toplessand#44; the doors open and close with that feeling of precision that no other roadster has been able to duplicate. All the chrome trim is originaland#44; so it might be showing its age just a little bitand#44; but the rubber bumpers mandated by the Feds are in great shape and theres no mistaking those traditional Mercedes-Benz taillights out back. This car is an icon. An SL interior always manages to be both sporty and luxurious. This one wears black MB Tex upholsteryand#44; which is both durable and comfortable. The dark color works quite well against the red paintand#44; and it appears that new seat covers were installed over the original seatsand#44; so theyre in good shape. Theres genuine wood on the dash to warm things upand#44; and the bigand#44; boldand#44; clear instruments should look familiar to anyone who has driven a Mercedes in the past four decades. Lots of standard featuresand#44; including a newer Kenwood AM/FM/CD/iPod stereo with a custom speaker setup in the rear package shelf areaand#44; power windowsand#44; and other goodies are all part of the deal hereand#44; so its truly a no-compromises car. The black canvas convertible top is there for emergencies and seals up remarkably welland#44; while a removable hardtop is also included. And despite the SLs diminutive sizeand#44; the trunk is functional and finished with a rubber matand#44; perfect for two people and their luggage. The 4.5 liter SOHC V8 under the hood was a Mercedes-Benz hallmark for yearsand#44; and by 1976and#44; it had been refined to the point where it was virtually indestructible. Todayand#44; parts and knowledge are easy to findand#44; and most SL fans discover that despite the cars complexityand#44; its no more difficult to service than any other daily driver. The 3-speed automatic transmission was the only choice in the USand#44; and it does feel syrupy in normal drivingand#44; but start getting aggressive and it moves with youand#44; dropping down a gear to get into the meaty part of the torque curve. The four-wheel independent suspension is supple yet hangs on when youre hustlingand#44; and the brakes are 4-wheel discs for impressive stopping power. Correct 14-inch alloys wear 205/70/14 blackwalls for an understated look. Still famous after all these yearsand#44; the SL has aged gracefully. This isnt a perfect carand#44; but its priced right and a bit of TLC could really be a smart investment. Call today! |
