Survivors of all shapes and sizes are red hot todayand#44; and this neat 1978 Plymouth Sport Fury represents a new generation of collectable cars. Affordableand#44; interestingand#44; and great to driveand#44; it will bring fresh hobbyists into the foldand#44; guys who remember these cars from their childhoodand#44; and thats what the old car hobby is all about. As far as we can telland#44; the black paint on this car is entirely original save for the right front fenderand#44; which was repainted years ago. That was probably when the car was in regular serviceand#44; although given its preservation and the low mileage (37and#44;850)and#44; that probably wasnt for long. The big coupe definitely has presence and its remarkable to see just how big and flashy even the Plymouths were in the 1970s. Fit and finish are just the way the factory did itand#44; with surprisingly good gaps and big doors that close easilyand#44; and even that gigantic hood sits flush behind the upright grille. There are a few signs of useand#44; of courseand#44; but nothing major beyond some nicks on the rockers that are all but inevitable. And since this was the 1970sand#44; theres plenty of chromeand#44; including big shiny bumpers at both endsand#44; the stainless rub strip running the length of the bodyworkand#44; and big PLYMOUTH lettering on the nose and tail. Theres also an interesting white vinyl half-roofand#44; which gives this luxury coupe a distinctive look that works rather well. If you thought houndstooth upholstery was just for Camarosand#44; youre in for a surprise hereand#44; because the tastefully outfitted interior in this Sport Fury looks great. Bigand#44; plush bucket seats perfectly capture the spirit of the 1970s but they dont go overboard into ridiculousness like so many others. And they are certainly well-preservedand#44; with very little wear and no discoloration to any of the major components. The white door panels are in great shapeand#44; showing no signs that someone rested his elbow on the silland#44; and the black carpets and dash keep it anchored. A few spots of faux woodgraining warm it up a bit and as a top-of-the-line luxury modeland#44; there are a lot of optionsand#44; including cold A/Cand#44; power windowsand#44; and an AM/FM/8-track stereo. Bigand#44; round gauges cover speedand#44; temperatureand#44; and fuel leveland#44; with secondary controls tucked underneath to give it a surprisingly clean look. The back seat is spacious enough for real-sized adults and you get a massive trunk thats still carrying what appears to be the original spare tire and mat. By 1978and#44; the horsepower wars were overand#44; but the 360 cubic inch V8 used here is no slouch. Its all about smoothness and torqueand#44; and the 360 delivers. Its totally original with only routine maintenance items being replaced and serviced over the years. Theres still corporate turquoise engine enamel on the engine itselfand#44; a stock air cleaner with original hoseand#44; and even the factory washer bottle thats cleverly integrated into the battery hold-down. Electronics were starting to become prevalent on carsand#44; and all the various systems are working as they shouldand#44; so it runs great. The transmission is a 3-speed automatic and theres a set of highway gears out backand#44; making this smooth coupe a fantastic highway cruiser. You probably already know how great torsion bar Chryslers rideand#44; and the new single exhaust system offers little more than a hushed whisperand#44; which is how luxury was done in 1978. Factory wire wheel covers and whitewall radials complete the period look. Maybe you remember a car like this when you were younger. Maybe youre looking for an inexpensive but interesting hobby car. Either wayand#44; this is a great example of an overlooked machine. Call today! |
