Who would have thought that the funkyand#44; quirky VW microbus would become a red-hot collectable? This 1979 Volkswagen bus takes a little different path with a California-style custom makeover that includes a few performance upgradesand#44; an awesome custom lookand#44; and a rolling movie theater within. Just imagine hitting the cruise nights with this neat little bus! Traditional busses are everywhereand#44; but if you want to really stand outand#44; building a custom bus is the only way to go. This is a cargo vanand#44; not a transporterand#44; so it lends itself perfectly to the two-tone lookand#44; since you dont have to worry about windows. The burgundy metallic paint has a lot of metallic and pearl in itand#44; so it really glows in the sunlightand#44; and even in our studio you can see that the sheetmetal is incredibly straight and smooth. The black strip along the window line adds length and further differentiates this Vee-Dub from its siblings. A few body-colored trim bits such as the simple steel bumpers make it seem sleek (as sleek as a box on wheels can lookand#44; anyway) but the big chrome VW emblem on the nose is recognized around the world. Theres clearly a lot of money tied up in this buildand#44; and while its not perfectand#44; it does make a statement that is hard to resist. Insideand#44; there are a host of changes and youll see why the panel truck was ideal for this build. The front seats are the usual wide buckets now wrapped in comfortable two-tone gray vinyl. Slide behind the bigand#44; leather-wrapped steering wheel and youll see the original instrumentsand#44; which pretty much amount to speed and fuel leveland#44; just like in the Beetle. Howeverand#44; with the upgraded engine and a 4-speed manual transmissionand#44; its pretty peppy around town. Neatly fitted black carpets throughout help control noise and heat and are a big step up from the original rubber matsand#44; and the custom door panels add a little flashand#44; too. Open the rear sliding door and youll see why using a panel van was important. Theres a standard bench seatand#44; of courseand#44; and its upholstered to match the front seatand#44; but everything else is black. Hit a button and a flat-screen TV rises out of a special housing behind the front seatand#44; giving you long-range entertainmentand#44; including a Sony PS3. Its dark and quiet back thereand#44; like a movie theaterand#44; and its easy to imagine hitting the road with the whole gang in this one. Theres still plenty of storage behind the seatand#44; and its all quite nicely finished so itll draw a lot of attention at shows. The engine is a strong-running 1774cc flat-four with a pair of EMPI carburetors and a few other horsepower tricks that really wake it up. Its neatly detailed and painted to match the bodyworkand#44; so dont be afraid to show it off. That giant alternator powers two batteriesand#44; and it offers 110 volts to power the entertainment system as well. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts about how youd expect a VW to shiftand#44; a little vague but youll get the hang of itand#44; and the suspension is augmented with air bags so you can fine-tune the ride height. Disc brakes have been fitted up front and theres a great-sounding exhaust out back that has a bit of aggression but loses none of that traditional VW soundtrack. Reproduction 17-inch Fuchs alloys look like they belong on an early Porsche 911and#44; and theyre wrapped in reasonably fat 205/50/17 Yokohama radials. This is the coolest thing youve never seen beforeand#44; and just imagine the crowd itll attract everywhere it goes. Fun to drive and nicely finishedand#44; this VW is a great combination of practical and fun. Call today! |
