By 1978, it became obvious to Aston Martin that the United States consumers were eager to have convertible sports cars, a body style long aborted by many US manufacturers due to enhanced safety regulations. This spurred the introduction of the Volante Convertible, which was hand built for 12 years, ending in 1990. Only 650 units would be produced, equaling about 50 production cars a year, just one per week. Constructed of an aluminum body and reinforced steel frame, it was said to near equal in weight to its coupe counterpart. Returning to the interior for the first time in two decades would be a burled wood dash and trim veneer to enhance the luxury feel, along with new power-operated features like outside mirrors and folding soft top. The suspension was enhanced to become a solid, road-hugging sports car utilizing coil spring Koni shocks up front, anti-sway bar with twin wishbone control arms, and coil-over rear suspension with Watts linkage and lever-action shocks. Four-wheel servo-assisted Girling disc brakes can be found at all four corners! A delightful car to drive, both for its performance and quality ride!
