You might be surprised to learn that cars like this 1984 Buick Riviera coupe are becoming popular entry-level collectors items. This oneand#44; with just 25and#44;572 original milesand#44; the optional 5.0 liter V8 engineand#44; and a great color combination makes it more appealing than mostand#44; a great way to own a vintage car that doesnt ask much from its owner. The angular Riv has aged welland#44; avoiding the dated look of many of its 80s peers and still delivering a look that whispersand#44; Luxury. White was one of the most popular colors on these carsand#44; so popular that when the factory rolled out the convertiblesand#44; this was one of only two choices. Maybe thats why it still looks freshand#44; because the factory-applied paint remains in excellent shape. Theres a softer shine thats indicative of paint thats got a few decades on itand#44; but theres exactly zero evidence that this car has ever been wrecked or rusty. There are a few chips here and thereand#44; all of which are will in line with its age and mileageand#44; but nothing that should raise any eyebrows. The single pinstripe that highlights the swooping belt line breaks up all the whiteand#44; if only just a little bit. The padded half-roof is in excellent shapeand#44; showing no tears or popped seams and certainly no signs of trouble underneath. Bright chrome bumpersand#44; a classic waterfall grilleand#44; and some bright stainless accents all help make the Riviera look upscaleand#44; both then and now. The handsome gray leather interior is a nice change from the usual redand#44; and its very nicely preserved overall. Bucket seats and a console were a welcome sight in the luxury-oriented Rivieraand#44; suggesting that GMs personal/luxury coupes were aiming a little bit higher than they had in the past. Seating surfacesand#44; door panelsand#44; and carpets are in great shape showing only the most minor wear that youd expect from a 30-year-old carand#44; and its still a treat to settle into the seat behind the big steering wheel. Everything was standard in the Rivieraand#44; including A/Cand#44; power windowsand#44; locksand#44; and seatsand#44; cruise controland#44; and a decent AM/FM/cassette stereoand#44; which is the familiar Delco unit that GM used for many years. The woodgrained accents warm up the gray interior and everything seems to be working correctly. The back seat is reasonably-sized for adults and theres a big trunk in backand#44; complete with its original space-saver spare tire. The 5.0 liter V8 used in the Riviera was optionaland#44; and youll be glad to have its effortless reserves of torque. Its not a horsepower monsterand#44; but its smoothand#44; quietand#44; and competentand#44; and youll be amazed by the silence inside the car atand#44; sayand#44; 60 MPH. Nicely maintainedand#44; it has never needed anything major and with so few milesand#44; it should continue to run properly for many years to come. It starts quickly and idles smoothly and with a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmissionand#44; it actually pulls down decent fuel economy on the open road. The A/C has been serviced and converted to R134a refrigerantand#44; but everything else appears OEMand#44; which is a good thing. The single exhaust system has a proper muted hum and the undercarriage is every bit as clean as youd expect from a low-mileage car from the south. 4-wheel discsand#44; a fully independent suspensionand#44; and recent whitewall radials make it a pleasure to drive. Complete with manualsand#44; title documentationand#44; and even a factory build sheetand#44; this is a great entry-level hobby car that makes it easy to enjoy the motoring experience from decades ago.
