Remember when you were a kid and dreamed of owning a police car? And then when you found out Ford built a bunch of Mustangs designed for high-speed workand#44; you vowed that someday one of those would be yours? Welland#44; that day has arrivedand#44; because this is a genuine 1986 Mustang Special Service Package LX coupeand#44; and yesand#44; its just as cool as you imagined it would beand#44; especially with a long list of upgrades under the skin. This was a legitimate Marti-verified Florida Highway Patrol interceptorand#44; used for high-speed pursuits and traffic controland#44; and as a resultand#44; it has never been rusty. In factand#44; every single body panel is original to the carand#44; and carries the proper VIN stampsand#44; so you know it hasnt been pieced back together from cast-offs like so many abused and abandoned police vehicles. The paint is recentand#44; and in sinister blackand#44; it gives the Mustang a definite government hot-rod vibe and youll be thrilled to note that its completely protected by 3M wrap (about $3500 worth!). The SSP cars didnt advertise their presenceand#44; so this one still looks low-keyand#44; although cruising this sucker through rush-hour traffic seems to make commuters flee in terror. The look is cleanand#44; unadornedand#44; and very purposefuland#44; and thats just the way we like it. Insideand#44; the SSP Mustangs got the base interiorand#44; which means soft tan cloth buckets that were easy to get in and out of with a full uniform and utility belt full of gear. But unlike most police carsand#44; the seats arent crushed and ruinedand#44; suggesting that someone really cared about taking care of this one; maybe the guys assigned to control traffic knew they were piloting something special. A lot of the equipment is NOS and I cant imagine these cars looking much better on their first day of work. A 5-speed manual is unusual for a police carand#44; but if you wanted the most from your enforcement-grade Mustangand#44; that was the smart choice. Cold A/C was a mandatory option in the Florida heatand#44; but there are few other optionsand#44; so you know this pony was built for battle. It does have a row of switches on the center console for managing various functionsand#44; a police-issue 140 MPH speedoand#44; and a trio of auxiliary gauges out on the hoodand#44; right where theyll do the most good. And in the trunk youll find an ultra-rare and desirable aluminum space-saver rim which is probably worth $1000 all by itself. Fords legendary 5.0 liter V8 was under the hoodand#44; and in 1986and#44; there werent many cars on the road that could outrun the fastand#44; agile Mustang. Neverthelessand#44; this one has been seriously fortified beyond police specand#44; starting with a high-nickel content block stuffed with a 1994 Cobra rotating assemblyand#44; TrickFlow heads and intakeand#44; and a Vortech supercharger. A custom tune makes it work right with the 42 lb-hr injectors and a custom cam. Note that it still sports its SSP synthetic hosesand#44; oversized alternatorand#44; and industrial-strength cooling systemand#44; as well as a strut tower brace. Underneathand#44; its spotless and has long-tube headersand#44; a new Flowmaster exhaust systemand#44; new steering rackand#44; and 4-wheel disc brakes. In backand#44; theres an 8.8-inch axle with pursuit-friendly 3.55 gearsand#44; and it sits on those awesome 1986-only highway patrol wheels with fat BFG radialsand#44; so it looks especially nasty. So go aheadand#44; live the dream. Its every bit as fun as a regular Mustangand#44; with an extra helping of highway intimidation built right in. Call today! |
