Will the big cat from Coventry ever get any love? This 1991 Jaguar XJS convertible is some top-flight European sex appeal for a bargain-basement price. Great colors certainly helpand#44; but driving this car will make you feel like a million bucks and nobody has to know just how affordable it really is. When you buy a Jaguarand#44; you get something special. This graceful feline wears its original red paintand#44; and for 25 years oldand#44; its absolutely astounding. Of course its not perfectand#44; but its condition today speaks volumes about the quality of the workmanship when it was new and its still visible todayand#44; not to mention the care it has received over the years. The final evolution of the XJS shape was sleek and handsomeand#44; and even in 1991 when this car was builtand#44; it hardly looked like a 15-year-old design. The flashy red paint shines up nicely and shows only modest signs of useand#44; and theres just enough bright chrome to add an elegance that is seldom seen on lesser cars. The doors open and close with a feeling of quality and by 1991 Jaguar had figured out how to make a true convertible instead of that awful half-roof thing they tried to pass off on customers just a few years earlier. That leaping cat hood ornamentand#44; a deep air damand#44; and those oversized taillights above a pair of chrome exhaust pipes all make for a delightfully sexy car with a ton of presenceand#44; even today. The interior is really where Jaguar excels. Rich materials that lookand#44; feeland#44; and smell expensive were a big part of the Jags allure. The tan leather buckets are supportive enough for sporting driving but dont feel confining for long trips and the leatherand#44; while showing a few minor signs of ageand#44; is really holding up nicely. Real wool carpets and genuine wood trim add to the upscale ambience and the bigand#44; clear gauges are easy to read at a glance. Everything was standard on your top-of-the-line Jaguarand#44; including power windows and locksand#44; a powerful AM/FM/cassette stereoand#44; automatic climate controland#44; and a tilt steering columnand#44; so you wont be wishing for anything while youre out driving. I suppose you could call the rear area a back seat but its really an exquisitely upholstered package shelf thats only suited to children. The nicely tailored black canvas convertible top offers a glass rear window with defroster and folds into a rather British-looking stack that hides under a matching black canvas boot for a tidy look. Jaguars mighty 5.3-liter SOHC V12 provides power and while some might think its just too complicated to maintainand#44; the last 25 years have proven that when properly cared forand#44; these engines are robust and reliable. Like all Jaguar twelvesand#44; its silky smooth at any speed and pulls with increasing urgency as speeds increaseand#44; offering almost muscle car-like levels of torque. The engine bay is impressively clean and the individual intake runners and exhaust manifolds look similar to what youd find in a vintage E-Typeand#44; although modern fuel injection makes it far less cantankerous. Backed by a familiar GM TH400 3-speed automatic overdrive transmissionand#44; its an effortless highway cruiser best suited to long highway drives in first-class comfort. The independent suspension soaks up bumps without giving up its agilityand#44; a Jaguar trademark since the beginningand#44; and the 4-wheel disc brakes are suitably powerful. Handsome alloy wheels are unscuffed and subtle and carry relatively recent blackwall radials. With just two owners and only 35and#44;919 original milesand#44; this sleek Jag has to be the bargain of the century. Fastand#44; comfortableand#44; and stylishand#44; few cars today can match its combination. Call now! |
