1991 Mazda Miata. This is the prototype Sunburst Miata produced in 1991. Its also the only B package Sunburst ever produced. It came equipped with the optional factory AC and a matching hardtop. Mazda produced this 1991 version to see if the car would test well with the American public. Although they had already made the decision to produce Sunburst for other markets they were still skeptical about its acceptance here. They volunteered this car for numerous magazine reviews and shootouts and it was driven for Road and Track by Danny Sullivan of Indy Car fame. Because it was to be used as a press car Mazda installed an engine built and tuned to exact engineering specifications. It produces 106 RWHP versus the 90-95 of a normal 1.6L car. . The car was also used by several Miata executives for brief stints including Bob Hall the unofficial father of the Miata. It is also signed by Tom Matano the lead designer of the Miata as evidenced by the photo of him signing the car. This car is as well documented as humanly possible. Everything from private emails with Mazda execs about the car to a genuine factory build sheet where the color was termed Formula Yellow and did not become Sunburst yellow until the actual window sticker. .
