Ford invented the high-performance pickup truck with the SVT Lightning in the mid-90sand#44; a legacy that continues today in various forms from a variety of manufacturers. Better stilland#44; first-generation trucks like this 1993 Ford F150 Lightning were siblings of the mighty 5.0 Mustangand#44; and all the goodies that you can use on a Mustang can be used just as well on a Lightningand#44; just as they were in this case. But before we get to the hardwareand#44; lets talk about the enduring popularity of the F150. Simple good looks were surely part of the trucks longevity and popularityand#44; and the SVT engineers didnt do much to change that. They took the lightest and most maneuverable body (the short bedand#44; regular cab) for their hot rod pickupand#44; and offered it in only three colors: whiteand#44; blackand#44; and the bright red found on this one. Twenty years laterand#44; its not so subtleand#44; thanks to a traditional flame job licking across its nose. It was probably painted when it was still pretty new and despite the passage of timeand#44; the paint still shinesand#44; the gaps are good all aroundand#44; and since the Lightning could technically carry a loadand#44; this one got a heavy duty rubber mat in the bed. Theres also a rear roll pan that replaces the rather frumpy-looking stock bumperand#44; and a subtle chin spoiler that gives it an aggressive road-race look. Its topped by a tonneau coverand#44; making the bed a safeand#44; weather-proof place to carry your stuff. Obviously someone has been careful with the interiorand#44; because the handsome cloth bucket seats and center console look great and certainly better than youd expect with the mileage. It also still carries its original wheel and instrument paneland#44; plus surprisingly plush carpets that make this truck feel luxuriousand#44; not basic. Lightnings came only one way: loadedand#44; so this one includes A/Cand#44; power windows and locksand#44; cruise controland#44; and an upgraded Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo. Its all in extremely good shape and the by keeping as much OEM hardware as possibleand#44; reliability is unharmed; the A/C is coldand#44; the windows zip up and downand#44; and the truck still works as if its years younger than it is. Now about that engine. Seeand#44; the Lightning got a 351 cubic inch V8and#44; and as part of the Windsor familyand#44; its basically a tall-deck 5.0. And yesand#44; it also means that all the 5.0 performance parts will bolt right onand#44; which is the case here. The engine was fully rebuiltand#44; bored .040 overand#44; stuffed with a set of DSS forged pistonsand#44; a Comp Cams roller camshaftand#44; ported GT40 headsand#44; and adjustable roller rockers. Theres a custom tune to make it work rightand#44; an upgraded fuel pump in the rear tankand#44; and an MDS ignition systemand#44; all topped by that distinctive Lightning GT40 intake manifold. Its bolted to a reworked 1995 AOD 4-speed automatic thats been suitably fortified with a Bandamp;M shift kitand#44; and the rear end was rebuilt in 2015and#44; including a fresh set of 4.11 gears to really make this sucker feel snappy. A custom Flowmaster exhaust system sounds gnarlyand#44; and the OEM look continues with a set of 18-inch alloys from a 2000 SVT Lightning which wear staggered 255/60/18 front and 285/60/18 performance radials. Cleverly built and extremely fastand#44; this Lightning is more than just a fast truckand#44; its a Mustang with a bed. Call today! |
